Fashion journalist & blogger Louise Dawson shares her style secrets and helps Boden fans of all shapes and sizes get shape savvy.
I’m sure we’ve all been clothes shopping long enough in our day to day lives to be able to agree that it is sometimes very hard to find clothes to suit your shape? Here is my guide to dressing right for your body type…
Have you been blessed with slender shoulders yet curvaceous hips? If you are nodding your head right now then you can rest assured that you certainly have a ‘pear’ body shape. Now the tricky thing is to make sure you flatter your assets without hiding them. Thankfully, Boden have just the right thing. The Glamorous maxi dress available for dispatch from April is sure to be a popular item on everyone’s wish list – lucky for you pear shapes though it will suit your figure perfectly. The V neck will broaden out your shoulders just enough to even your top half to your voluptuous hip structure and what’s even better is that it isn’t figure hugging, so not only will it skim down your figure nicely, but it will probably be one of the comfiest fashions you will ever be lucky enough to invest in.
If you’re curvaceous from head to toe and have more of a rounded figure then you have the ‘apple’ body shape. The top tip is to keep necklines lower rather than higher. It’s just a matter of staying away from polo necks…which shouldn’t be that hard as summer should be on its way here! As for your bottom half, Boden have a fabulous skirt this season called the San Tropez skirt. This bell shaped skirt will look fabulous on your figure and comes in a colour to suit everyone’s taste: white, delphinium, pewter and ink are all set to be trendy colours this season. I would personally recommend the skirt in ink, possibly matching it with some red accessories and a white top – perfect for the re-occurring nautical trend.
A new shape to emerge recently is the ‘strawberry’. It is quite easy to tell if you fit into this category – basically all you need to do is to distinguish if you have a broad or curvy top half and a slender lower body. If your nodding your head right now- then rest assured as you have found your shape! There is one item from Boden in particular this season that you will feel was made for you as soon as you try it on. The Sun Downer! This beautifully made dress has an outer layer of 100% silk and had an extremely flattering cut – the fitted lower cut bodice and skirt that flows out from an empire line will do your figure wonders this summer.
The hourglass figure doesn’t really need explaining – it is the shape we all envy, the slim waist with the voluptuous chest and bottom… you can look good in more or less anything. But there are still some rules you should obey, the main one being to flaunt what you’ve got! You should befriend any style that nipps in at the waist and follows your flawless silhouette (Magic knickers are okay, please don’t be put off by the thought of Bridget Jones) Treat your wardrobe to the printed tunic and I promise you will find it very hard to part with. Again with four great colours to choose from, there is something to suit every taste.
Last but not least we have the ‘rectangle’. You are very lucky as most styles from Boden will flatter your figure. If your stuck on what to buy from all the choice then opt for the Jersey tie dress. The high neckline and short sleeves will help give you a little more shape, whilst the pattern along with the structure in the waist and skirt will not only help to show off your legs, but will also give your hips a little more shape making your figure more alluring to eye!

Excellent site. Lots of helpful info here. I am sending it to some buddies ans also sharing in delicious. And obviously, thank you to your sweat!
I would love the idea of a section on the website where you could put in your shape type and a list of suitable clothes pops up. I often order things that look fab on the models, and then I try them on only to realise that they don’t suit my shape, and then I have to regretfully send them back.

What a savy idea!
Why don’t we, Boden Community People, just put up a pic of ourselves and ask other Boden members to suggest outfits, ideas, tips, etc.
It would take the pain out of my shopping experience and might help me better realise my style – it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut! Your idea will do just the job.
Now, all we need is someone to start us off….
I like the idea of Louise’s advice but none of the models demonstrate the figures described! I find that Boden clothes are all perfect for women with no stomachs because they always seem to be cut quite tightly in that area. Alas, this is not me and is why, regretfully, I buy less and less from Boden.
I don’t fit into any of these categories…..but the summery looks are good
I love the stripy bretton top and the purple strappy dress!
Hmmmm – Sadly im brick shaped. Chunky, broad and straight up and down. Any suggestions for me. I Love Mini Boden on my girls but I wouldnt have a clue where to start for me.
Very useful stuff
great blog & lovely clothes!
Thanks this is great – can we have similar for tops, trousers, skirts, knitwear, accessories please
ooh gorgeous, will definitely have to order the Jersey tie dress as I love it and I’m a rectangle !!!
Ooh, strawberry is the new fruit shape! I like the suggestions here.
Lovely blog. I had decided I am a cantalope!
These look gorgeous fresh and summery!
What about a strawberry with awful legs?!
Hi Charlie… for a strawberry with awful legs I would recommend the voile maxi dress:
http://www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Dresses/Below-Knee-Dresses/WH245/Womens-Voile-Maxi.html
It is not clingy around the top half as it falls nicely from just below the bust down to around the ankles (meaning no ‘awful legs’ will be on show!) and also its lovely dainty pattern will help to even out the upper and lower part of the body! I hope this helps!
